The University Innovation Challenge, under the theme of Fostering Resilience, was successfully launched at KCA University on September 27, 2024. The challenge, which aims at nurturing student innovators, was organized by Uzuzi Hub in partnership with NCBA Bank, the State Department of Labor and Skills Development, and Nairobi City County.

The theme of this year’s challenge, “Fostering Resilience,” highlights the importance of adaptability and creativity in the face of modern challenges. The launch event attracted over 100 students, academic leaders, private sector representatives, and government officials, all dedicated to nurturing Kenya’s next wave of young entrepreneurs.

The CEO and Founder of Uzuzi Hub, Mr John Wali, kicked off the event by sharing the critical role innovation plays in solving unemployment challenges and driving economic growth. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between universities, innovation hubs, and industry to create an enabling environment for student-led ventures.

“Innovation isn’t just about creating solutions; it’s about creating opportunities. Through this challenge, we hope to empower students to turn their ideas into thriving businesses that will shape the future of our economy,” said CEO of Uzuzi Hub.

The Keynote Speaker, Dr Wanjiru Kariuki, discussed the role of government in ensuring that young people understand that they can be job creators and not only job seekers, sharing details on how the department is working towards upskilling youth in Kenya.

“The second Policy Framework is the National Policy for Linking Industry to Education, Training and Research, which was approved by Cabinet on 7th March 2024. The goal of the policy is to promote and strengthen the linkages between industry and education, training, and research to drive a knowledge-based and globally competitive economy,” said Dr. Wanjiru Kariuki.
