Motorists have been warned of traffic disruptions on some Nairobi roads on Friday when the State funeral service of the late former President Mwai Kibaki will be held at the Nyayo Stadium. Roads leading to Nyayo Stadium are expected to be heavily guarded as the late former president’s funeral procession makes its way into the stadium, and even during the service.

Police spokesperson Bruno Shioso said in a statement on Thursday morning. Motorists are advised to avoid Aerodrome Road and sections of Uhuru Highway between Nyayo House and Lusaka roundabouts from 7.00 am.

“A procession to the stadium led by the Kenya Defence Forces will affect the flow of traffic on some parts of the procession route, namely Procession Way, Kenyatta Avenue, Uhuru Highway, Aerodrome Road as they proceed to the stadium.”

Vehicles headed for the city from Waiyaki Way and intending to cross over to Mombasa Road have been advised to avoid Uhuru Highway.

“Divert at Nyayo House Roundabout and join Kenyatta Highway towards Moi Avenue heading to Haile-Selassie Roundabout, then towards City Stadium onwards to Mombasa Road.”

Bruno Shioso said.

Those from Mombasa Road intending to access the Central Business District or Westlands are advised to use Southern Bypass, or Likoni Enterprise and Lusaka roads to avoid inconveniences along Uhuru Highway.

“Due to limited parking space at Nyayo National Stadium, owing to a high number of human and vehicle traffic expected, only vehicles bearing parking access stickers shall be allowed parking within the stadium premises.”

Added Shioso.

Consequently, vehicles without stickers shall only be allowed to drop off guests beside the stadium and then proceed to Lang’ata Road Primary School and Green Park where parking shall be provided.

All persons planning to attend the State funeral service are expected to be seated by 8 a.m. and according ​​to Interior Ministry Cabinet Secretary Dr.Fred Matiang’i.

“We request our citizens to be time conscious because this is a ceremony that involves a lot of people and we want to make sure that no one is inconvenienced,”

He stated

The service is estimated to conclude at around 1.00 p.m. after which all attendees will be expected to disperse. This is to allow enough time for the preparation of the final rites that will be conducted at the former President’s home.

“We want to start early so that those who require to travel out of town can move back to their homes early enough.”

The Interior Ministry Cabinet Secretary assured Kenyans that there will be no mishaps at the funeral service.
