Kenya to ignore China’s rising Covid cases, won’t ask for negative tests from travelers

China Covid Cases

Kenya will not demand for Covid negative test results from travelers landing in Kenya from China.

This has been announced by Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha. The decision by the Ministry of Health is against the resolution of multiple first world countries that have imposed travel restrictions on people coming out of China.

“In my view, I don’t think it’s going to be necessary for us to impose any travel restrictions on travellers from China. Some of those restrictions we impose have an economic impact,” Nakhumicha told a local daily.

“Remember even economically we are just recovering, so I will not rush to impose any restrictions but my call to Kenyans is that they should continue with vaccinations for those who have not been vaccinated.”

China is currently experiencing a nationwide outbreak of the coronavirus after abruptly easing restrictions that were in place for much of the pandemic.

Countries such as the United States, Canada, Italy and France have all demanded that travelers originating from China must provide negative test results before boarding.

The countries have accused China of withholding information on the type of variant that is currently on high spread in the country and the actual number of fatalities.

China has however countered the restrictions, saying they are a smear campaign and it’s Covid cases are not as dire as they are being made to appear.

“We believe that the entry restrictions adopted by some countries targeting China lack scientific basis, and some excessive practices are even more unacceptable,” foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said at a briefing on the China Covid cases.

“We are firmly opposed to attempts to manipulate the Covid measures for political purposes and will take countermeasures based on the principle of reciprocity.”
