Should You Close Your Business During A Public Holiday? Here Is Your Answer

By Bizna Brand Analyst

Many business owners keep wondering whether they should close their businesses during holidays or stay operational. Sometimes you want to keep on making the money, but sometimes you just want to take a rest. If you decide to stay working, you might feel that you are missing out on the social aspects of your life whereas if you decide to enjoy your holiday, you might feel like you are missing out on profits. So what should you do?

There are two important factors you need to consider when deciding whether to shut down or stay operational.

What type of business do you have?

Or rather, where will your clients be on a holiday? If you run a butchery, clothes shop or entertainment spot for example, it will be foolish to close on a holiday. People will definitely be buying more meat on a holiday. People will definitely be shopping more on a holiday. People will definitely be hanging out in bars or clubs more.

But if you run a corporate business, it’s highly unlikely that you will be getting any clients on a holiday. The corporate world is hectic and most people who are in it will be choosing to rest. So it won’t harm you to close your business too and open after the holiday is over. Even if you’re in the office, you’ll likely find that your phones are quiet and your email is mostly empty. Just close and entrust a loyal team member to answer any questions or handle any emergencies that arise during that period.

The choice of closing hours should directly correlate to the time you anticipate being the least busy.

How well is your business performing?

If you are making good money, you can have the luxury of shutting down for a day. This also sends a message to your employees that you care about them, you appreciate the good work they are doing in making the business profitable and you want them to spend time with their families during the holidays.

But if your business is struggling or still growing, a holiday might be the best time to catch up on competition and get most of the money that could have gone their way. If you have a couple of employees, you can make them work in shifts during the holiday. Some in the morning hours and some in the afternoon hours
