Slain lawyer Kyalo Mbobu was allegedly drowning in debts worth tens of millions of money. The lawyer was also allegedly facing multiple cases for double crossing clients. Reportedly, he had been paid millions of money on behalf of clients but refused to remit the amounts due to his clients in multiple occasions.
According to a report by the Standard Media Group’s KTN on the life of slain lawyer Kyalo Mbobu, the advocate had been blacklisted by banks and had resorted to borrowing from shylocks and credit companies.
The media house reported that in most cases, the interest on the loans that were taken by the lawyer exceed the principal amounts at times by more than ten times.
Apparently, five years ago in 2019, lawyer Kyalo Mbobu borrowed Sh10 million from a shylock. By 2021, he had sporadically paid Sh24 million. However, by 2025 at the time of his death, this debt had ballooned to an astonishing Sh72 million.
In yet another incident, the lawyer was dragged to court in the civil case E284/2023 at the Milimani Commercial Courts. The case showed that in 2021, Kyalo had been hired by the Christian Organizations Research & Advisory Trust of Africa (CORAT Africa) to oversee the sale of two parcels of land namely Lr No. 7777/8 and Lr No. 7777/9 in Karen area with a combined sale value of Sh250 million.
The entire purchase price was paid into Kyalo’s firm accounts. However, he released Sh153 million and withheld Sh97 million, even though his estimated legal fees amounted to just Sh8,665,091.70.
According to the report by KTN, he admitted withholding the money but claimed that he had done so as the funds were in lieu of his legal fees. In a judgement that was delivered on March 13, 2025 by Justice Francis Gikonyo, Kyalo was ordered to pay CORAT Sh97 million plus interest and only retain the Sh8.6 million legal fees.
In yet another incident, Kyalo was loaned Sh17 million by a Somali shylock. This debt then ballooned to Sh52 million.
