Final moments of cousins who died together on Xmas Eve, a week after graduating

Final moments of cousins who died together on Xmas Eve, a week after graduating

Two cousins, Daisy Binyanya and Clinton Obwocha perished together on 24th December, as they were traveling to their home in Nyamira County from Nairobi.

The two were supposed to reunite with their loved ones, but that reality to be was cut short by a deadly road crash along the Nairobi-Bomet road at Ratili.

Daisy Binyanya had just graduated from the Technical University of Kenya the previous weekend before the road crash with a Bachelor’s degree in Architectural engineering.

That previous weekend, she was transported home with her head held high full of smiles, dressed in a graduation gown.

A week later Daisy arrived at her hometown in a coffin. Clinton Obwacha on the other hand was a teacher who graduated from Kisii University in 2018.

The pair set off on their journey for Christmas celebrations at around 6 am. The duo had informed their parents that they would be arriving home later on in the day.

Daisy’s father recalls the last conversation he had with her.

“I asked her whether she had enough money for lunch and she said she did not. I then sent her Sh. 1,000 and that was the last conversation I had with my daughter,” he said.

His wife spent the better part of her day in the kitchen, preparing a meal for their daughter. This would not turn out to be a happy meal.

Rose Kwamboka, Daisy’s mother described Daisy as an honest and hardworking girl.

“My daughter was very smart in class. She always performed well and this tragedy happened at a time when she was almost about to enjoy the fruits of her hard work,” narrated Mrs. Kwamboka.

The fresh university graduate completed her primary studies with 382 marks in KCPE, proceeded to Kipsigis Girls High School and scored a B+ in KCSE exams, then joined TUK in Nairobi.

Elsewhere, Clinton Obwacha was also excited to be traveling home for Christmas with family. His father, Bernard Obwacha was equally happy and hoped his son would arrive well to celebrate Christmas day and the New Year together.

“I was preparing a meal for my son. I sat outside anxiously waiting for him to arrive from Nairobi where he works. I was very happy when he informed me he was coming home,” Mrs. Moraa, Clinton’s mom said.

Clinton kept his parents updated on his location for the trip’s entirety and all seemed well.

The jaded family came to learn of their kin’s passing through social media posts that had circulated.

Kevin Omote, Obwocha’s elder brother learned of the news first. He is extremely gutted following the demise of his only blood brother.

Short of words, a satiated Omote wrote;

“Rest In Peace (RIP) Clinton, my only blood brother,”

According to police reports, the vehicle’s driver lost control of the vehicle. It rolled several times before landing on the opposite side of the road.

The accident happened at around 11:20 am on Christmas Eve.

“The self-involved fatal road accident involved a motor vehicle of registration number KBN 444B make a Mercedes Benz Saloon,” the report read in part.

The driver who owned the car was a cousin of the deceased and has been identified as Duke Juma. Others in the vehicle were Michael Makori and Winnie Kerubo. The three were casualties and they survived the freak road crash.

Duke Juma has since been discharged from the hospital. Burial arrangements are underway.
