Timothy Yukei: How I bought my Volkswagen Passat for Sh. 180,000 in UK

Kenyan vlogger Timothy Yukei, popularly known as Huku Yukei has copped himself a new car, for his collection of material possessions. He recently purchased a used 2007 Volkswagen Passat.

Tim has been providing guidance to his channel’s loyalists on life for Kenyans living in the UK, more like Ibrahim Onami with Huku Yues videos.

In a YouTube video, the content creator showcased his new ride. He disclosed that he bought his car from a car lot in Peterborough.

Furthermore, he explained to Kenyans on what to expect when buying vehicles in the UK.

Sarcastically titled, ‘Nimenunua gari bei ya simu’ (I bought a car at the price of a phone), the video playfully highlights how affordable his car options were.

With no intentions of residing in the UK for a long time, Tim preferred to go for a used, affordable vehicle and pay for it in cash.

Tim told his fans that he had a driving licence, albeit a provisional one, as he was still in the process of obtaining his full license.

Before settling on which car to buy, Tim had to conduct due diligence on a vehicle trading website.

He emphasized on the importance of running vehicle reports for cars people were interested in to check whether they had any accident or theft history.

Additionally, one would need to verify whether the vehicles had successfully passed their annual inspection checks.

Notably, some vehicles were available for as low as £995. Tim was initially torn between 3 vehicle options; a 2007 VW Passat, a 2006 Vauxhall Astra and a 2009 BMW 5 Series.

“The BMW had almost 250,000 miles on the odometer (420,000 kilometres). It was a company vehicle used to run official errands and had regular services at BMW’s dealership yearly,” he explained the Sh. 200,000 price tag on the BMW.

Tim further stated that when searching for vehicles online, he noticed that prices were significantly cheaper compared to what he would find at the car yard.

At the Peterborough car lot, where he had gone to inspect the VW Passat, Tim experienced love at first sight.

He made the purchase at around Sh. 180,000 significantly lower than the estimated price for a used VW Passat in Kenya at Sh. 700,000.

“They sold it to me at around Sh. 180,000 which is equivalent to £1,500 (at the time of vehicle purchase),” he maintained.

The VW Passat had an odometer reading of 211,000 miles, and it came equipped with a radio and phone dial pad.

The car’s interior roof panel had diamond embeddings. There was a small dent on its left side and its number plate was slightly broken. These were the only imperfections.
