Mazda Demio vs Cx-5: Which gives better value on fuel efficiency, running costs

The Mazda CX-5 and its younger sibling the Mazda Demio are common sights on Kenyan roads. The two vehicles have grown in popularity in the Kenyan market and serve different individual segments for a variety of needs.

The Mazda Demio is a compact hatchback designed for efficiency; it is an affordable option between the two sisters. Its rivals in the Kenyan market include Toyota Vitz, Nissan Note, Honda Fit and Ford Fiesta.

On the other hand, the CX-5 is a mid-sized SUV built for versatility and comfort. As such, it competes with premium cars such as the Subaru Forester, Honda CR-V, Nissan X-Trail, Volvo XC60, BMW X3, Volkswagen Tiguan, Audi Q5, Mitsubishi Outlander, Toyota Rav4, Suzuki Escudo and Hyundai Santa Fe.

Before choosing preference between the two, several factors such as fuel consumption, maintenance costs and spare parts availability, among others, have to be considered.

Fuel Efficiency

This is a major factor when it comes to choosing a car to meet your daily needs. With regard to the Mazda Demio, it has a 1.3-litre SkyActiv-G engine which bears the potential to achieve 30km/l fuel economy.

Such levels can only be comparable to hybrid vehicles, thus making the Demio an excellent daily driver option for weekend commutes and city drives. The lightweight body, aerodynamic design and idle stop system further ensure your pockets retain as much money as they can hold.

Alternatively, the Mazda CX-5 comes with multiple engine options. They include a 2-litre petrol, a 2.5-litre petrol and a 2.2-litre diesel engine. In this case, fuel efficiency heavily depends on the choice of engine.

On average, the 2-litre petrol accounts for 13.5 km/l, the 2.5 litre takes up 11.3 km/l and the best-performing engine variant is the 2.2-litre diesel at 15.7 km/l.

These numbers are very respectable for an SUV. However, they are no match for the fuel economy of a Mazda Demio. Drivers looking to minimize fuel costs should prefer the Demio.

Servicing & Maintenance

When it comes to mechanic affairs, both vehicles offer completely different experiences. The smaller Mazda Demio has relatively simple mechanical components, which makes servicing easier and more affordable.

Spare parts are readily available at low costs. Routine maintenance of the vehicle such as oil changes and filter replacements should ensure the vehicle is running properly thus offering you value for money.

The Mazda CX-5 is a much larger and more advanced vehicle when it comes to maintenance. The engine varieties and sophisticated electronic systems require specialized hands that translate to higher servicing fees.

The diesel engine variant, despite efficiency, requires delicate care and regular servicing, especially with regard to the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) known for its clogging notoriety. For the CX-5, the rule of thumb is minor services at 5,000 km and major services at 10,000 km.

This should include multiple checks and component replacements. Due to the advanced technology running on the vehicle, some electronic components may require specialized sourcing.

Summarily, the CX-5 will be more expensive to maintain and spare parts could be less available than a Mazda Demio. The decision between the two cars depends on individual needs. The Mazda Demio is ideal for those who prioritize low running costs and need a reliable daily driver.

The Mazda CX-5, despite being quite spacious has a more luxurious feel to it. Maintenance costs will likely be steeper. Drivers who’d like to get performance, comfort, advanced features and occasionally a good off-road experience should opt for the Mazda CX-5.
