New digital driving licences to cost more

The new digital driving licences will cost motorists more.

The new licences are scheduled to come into operation from October 1.

According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), the renewal for a three year driving licence will now cost Sh. 3,000 up from Sh. 1,500.

The chips will store key details of a driver and secure identification and authentication of vehicle ownership which will also be very difficult to counterfeit.

The new licenses will have distinctive features such a motorists’ bio-metric details, a demerit point system and a payments wallet.

The wallet will enable drivers to make on-the-spot payments fr traffic offenses they might have committed and cater for any other costs.

The migration from the old licenses to the new ones will take a period of three years.

  1. This is extortion by government departments..Why pay double for renewing a driving licence that is similar to an ATM and yet ATMs are renewed for much less?..
