Nicholas Kioko: How much we make on YouTube per views

Kenyan content creator Nicholas Kioko has revealed amount of money Youtube pays Kenyan content creators when they hit 1 million views.

In an interview on a local radio station, Kioko who relies on YouTube as his main source of income revealed the video-sharing platform pays Kenyan content creators between Ksh 80,000 to Ksh 100,000, for every one million views.

He explained that the earnings are way below what their US counterparts make for a similar number of views.

“Creating content is expensive even though it pays but not as much. It’s just that the views I get here in Kenya, I usually get an average of 2.5 million views to 3.5 million views.

With those views, if I were in the USA, I would be living like a king, but here if you have 1 million views, you only get between Ksh. 80,000 to 100,000, but in the USA, you would get around Ksh. 1.3 million,” said Kioko.

According to sources, YouTube pays through the watch time hours that one gets rather than views in most instances.

While a video can attract a million views, it can create less revenue due to less watch time, with some viewers skipping ads or using ad blockers.

Previously, YouTube required content creators to have at least 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 watch hours in the past year or 10 million Shorts views in the last 90 days to get access to monetization features.

The Google-owned platform later lowered the subscriber threshold to 500 subscribers, with a minimum of 3 public uploads in the last 90 days and either 3,000 watch hours in the past year or 3 million Shorts views in the last 90 days.
