Investors in the Nairobi Securities Exchange will soon be able to diversify into a new investment unit known as Exchange Traded Funds.

The Capital Markets Authority, the exchange, the Central Depository and Settlement Corporation and other key stakeholders yesterday unveiled a roadmap to pave the way for the introduction of the new product.

Authority acting chief executive Paul Muthaura said the authority could fast-track the roll-out of new products and services in the capital markets and ensure timely regulatory response to market dynamics.

“The law does not set specific or prescriptive rules on what a market player can or cannot do, but rather sets broad but well-defined principles that they are expected to follow. This is more flexible and promotes innovation,” he added.

The Exchange Traded Funds is an investment unit traded just like the other securities, including stocks. It holds assets such as stocks, commodities, or bonds and typically trades close to its net asset value over the course of the trading day.

The authority, in consultation with key stakeholders, recently developed a guidance note to facilitate the introduction of the Exchange Traded Funds.

The watchdog’s board approved the guidance note, but proposed some amendments to the trading and listing rules that have fully taken into account guidelines on the Exchange Traded Funds trading.

The guidelines, which are the first ever in Kenya, now await the public’s input after which a validation meeting will be held with the stakeholders.

Once this is done, Capital Markets will be able to receive applications from promoters of the Exchange Traded Funds for consideration and final approval.

Over the past 24 years, Faulu Kenya has transformed from a loan scheme into one of the top Deposit Taking Microfinance (DTM) institutions. Currently, the bank has branch network of over 80 outlets with an employee base standing at around 1,000.

According to Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), Faulu Kenya is ranked as the second largest DTM in the country after Kenya Women Finance Trust and has a customer base of over 400,000.

It is this growth that perhaps captured the attention of Old Mutual. You see, in April last year, Old Mutual acquired a 67 per cent controlling stake in Old Mutual, turning Faulu Kenya into one of its subsidiaries. The deal involved an immediate injection of Sh. 2.8 billion of the Sh. 3.6 billion buy-out price.

“This capital injection will enable Faulu Kenya to expand banking services and insurance products to more Kenyans who are financially excluded in the micro, small and medium enterprises space,” said the then Faulu Kenya managing director after the buy-out.

Further, according to Old Mutual Emerging Markets CEO Ralph Mupita, Faulu Kenya will be working together with Old Mutual’s latest acquisition UAP and Old Mutual Kenya to generate more value to clients.

“Overall, we expect the suite of businesses to collaborate more closely to generate value to customers. Our intention is to focus more on revenue-generating activities and leveraging capabilities in the wider Old Mutual Emerging Markets group,” he said. “For example, Faulu Kenya has a large retail client base and footprint – and we see good opportunities to serve the needs of this market with our short-term insurance offerings.”

The buy-out saw Faulu Kenya meet CBK’s regulatory requirements on ownership of local banks while feeding into Old Mutual’s strategy to expand its bouquet of financial services. The CBK requirements bar investors who are not banks, foreign finance companies or the government from owning more than 25 per cent stake of local banks.

One of the most important functions of any house is good plumbing. Without good plumbing and wiring, a house can never be fully satisfactory. Getting good plumbing will ensure that you do not get any embarrassing disasters at home including the toilet backing up or the kitchen sink that gurgles as you drain out the washing. Causes of egg defects and how to cure them

Dr. Sophie Miyumo: Once in a while, every poultry farmer finds her birds have laid abnormal eggs. Abnormal in the sense that the eggs have weak shells or internal defects.

An occasional egg abnormality from the flock is no cause for panic, however, its persistency should be a matter of concern. Egg abnormalities in chicken can occur due to various factors.

In the absence of obvious disease symptoms such as sudden drop in production, respiratory problems and weight loss, potential environmental and dietary issues should be explored and once identified, remedied. While these abnormalities greatly affect the hatchability of the eggs, abnormal eggs can be consumed but those caused by infectious diseases are not safe for consumption and, thus, should be disposed.

Thin-shelled eggs or shell-less eggs are the most common defects in poultry farms. Young hens usually produce the first few eggs with shell defects since their reproductive tract is not fully matured. Upon maturity, the defect ceases and egg production peaks.

During this period, an occasional shell defect may occur and is nothing to worry about. It is mostly caused by temporary malfunctions in the shelling gland, the uterus or for some reason an egg is rushed through the uterus and laid prematurely.

Since the shell forms just before an egg is laid, stress induced by fright or excitement can cause a hen to expel an egg before the shelling process is finished. However, if these shell defects persist, they may be a sign of a serious disease, especially infectious bronchitis, which is accompanied by a drop in production and is highly-contagious with an infection rate of 100 per cent. However, if some hens are unaffected, this disease can be excluded.

Nutritional deficiencies, especially lack of Vitamin D or calcium impact the formation of the eggshell, resulting to abnormalities.

Calcium requirements in laying hens increase by age and warm weather. High temperatures reduce appetite, therefore, hens eat less and get less calcium from their rations. Nutritional deficiencies can be remedied by appropriate supplementation of the layers’ diet with crushed eggshells, limestone or limestone flour, and Vitamin A, D&E powder added to drinking water three times a week.

It should be noted that excessive consumption of calcium or phosphorus is likely to result in eggs with an abnormally thick or rough shells. Genetic defect could also be a cause for shell abnormalities.Bloody shells sometimes appear when pullets start laying before their bodies are ready, causing tissue to tear.

In mature birds, this could be caused by excess protein in the layers’ ration or coccidiosis, a disease that causes intestinal bleeding, though not common in adult birds. Odd-shaped or wrinkled eggs may be laid if a hen has been handled roughly or if for some reason her ovary releases two yolks within a few hours of each other, causing them to move through the oviduct close together.

The second egg will have a thin, wrinkled shell that’s flat towards the pointed end. If it bumps against the first egg, the shell may crack and mend back together before the egg is laid, causing a wrinkle.

Small-sized eggs of less than 35grams usually don’t have yolks and such eggs can’t be used for hatching but may be consumed. This is common among young hens whose laying mechanisms have not fully matured. In matured hens, this could be indicative of pieces of reproductive tissues breaking away and stimulating the egg formation process in the reproductive tract.

Double yolk eggs occur when ovulation happens too rapidly or when one yolk becomes joined with another. This is mostly seen in young hens that have not reached reproductive maturity yet and have unsynchronised reproductive cycles (roughly, it takes 22 – 25 hours to form and lay an egg).

Blood spots inside the egg can be genetic, as well as sudden environmental temperature changes. The incidence of blood spots inside the egg also increases with age.

His first business was a small garage in Nyeri, which he established soon after completing a course in mechanical engineering at a local polytechnic in 1996.

The business, however, faced many challenges, including delayed payments by clients and lack of capital to expand operations.

To supplement the income from the garage, Mr Livingstone Waithaka ventured into poultry — mainly rearing chicken for eggs to supply to restaurants and individuals.

This business also had various challenges as the chickens would stop laying eggs after a short while and he would incur heavy losses.

“I started with 300 layers but they started having problems and I sold them. Later, I bought another 400 layers, but they also stopped laying eggs after a short time. I sold them, too,” Mr Waithaka said.

This got him thinking about what else he could do to shore up his income and increase his capital base. Drawing from his mechanical engineering knowledge, he decided to make incubators for hatching chicks.

“The first electric incubator that I made had a 300-egg capacity. Of the initial 286 eggs that I put in, 168 chicks hatched.

“This motivated me to make more incubators. On improving the incubators, I attained an 80 per cent hatching rate.”

Many farmers were impressed with his work and started placing orders for incubators. The district agricultural office also requested him to showcase his work at agricultural shows in Nyeri.

This got more people interested in getting the incubators, which would use alternative energy sources other than electricity alone, given the challenges of accessing power in the villages.

Currently, the incubators can run on multiple energy sources — biogas, solar, electricity, and liquefied petroleum gas. Use of solar energy and biogas has proved popular in rural areas, which have erratic or no electric power supply.

“Most of the orders I get are for incubators with capacities of 1,000 to 2,000 eggs. But I can make bigger ones, depending on the orders,” he said.

The biggest incubator he has made has a capacity of 20,000 eggs. He uses it to hatch chicks for supply to customers.

Day-old chicks go for Sh90, earning him additional revenue. On average, he makes and supplies five incubators a month.

He says the hatching rate has improved to 90 per cent, given proper handling procedure. The incubators turn the eggs automatically, eliminating the need for manual input.

They also regulate the room temperatures to the recommended 37 degrees Celsius.

When electricity goes off, the biogas or gas units are switched on automatically, hence maintaining the required temperature and humidity levels.

This guarantees high success rates and repeat business from clients, referrals, and consistent orders, even by senior government officials.

For larger incubators, like the 20,000-egg capacity walk-in incubator, he works on the client’s site and charges between Sh1.2 and Sh1.5 million.

He sells a 1,000 capacity incubator at Sh250,000, while the 500 capacity one goes for Sh90,000.

“The demand is very high right now. I used to make and sell only two incubators a month, but the orders have risen to over five each month,” he says.

He says the large incubators are more economical for those venturing into commercial hatching of chicks, given the fact that they use almost the same amount of energy as the small incubators.

Now he makes incubators on a full-time basis, operating under the name Limer Farm Local Digital Thermostat Incubators in Nyeri, Central Kenya.
He also looks to make incubators that can run on sawdust, which is used by many households for cooking.

Terrorist arrested at President Uhuru’s home

A suspected Al Shabaab terrorist, Said Mirre Siyad, who was arrested at President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Gatundu home has been detained following a court order. Mr. Siyad is alleged to have been surveying the home in preparation for a terrorist attack.

However, according to prosecutor Daniel Karuri, the suspected terrorist was unable to explain what he was doing at the home when he got arrested. He was arrested on Tuesday by the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit.

Further, according to Mr. Karuri, Siyad has other accomplices who are yet to be nabbed by police.

Kenya Airways CEO Mbuvi Ngunze last week said the airline will sell five older planes and some of its land to offload its huge loans. Similarly, Kenya Airways is currently negotiating a bridging loan to help it through a cash crunch caused by a drop in passenger numbers.

Kenya Airways, which is part-owned by AirFrance-KLM, made a Sh12.5 billion loss in the six months to September last year after a spate of terror attacks in Kenya made it tough to fill its fleet of new Boeing 787 Dreamliners.

At the end of the financial year to March 2014, the carrier’s net debt was Sh77.8 billion. Mr Ngunze said the outlook for the peak holiday season this July and August was steady for now, but could be hurt by the Garissa University Attack that killed 148 people. Some hotels have already reported cancellations.

Business Daily: The NSE will from May 19 classify the four companies under the Growth and Enterprise Market (Gems) segment with other stocks, ending their separate category. This means the number of sectors in the market will drop to 11 from 12. The NSE will still however retain its four market segments namely Main Investment Market Segment (Mims), the Alternative Investment Market Segment (Aims), Fixed Income Securities Market Segment (Fisms) and Gems.

Atlas Support and Development Services will shift to the commercial and services sector, Kurwitu Ventures and Home Afrika to the investments sector while Flame Tree Group Holdings moves to manufacturing.

The Gems segment was launched in January 2013, with Home Afrika becoming its first listing in July 2013. The other three listed in the last quarter of last year.

The NSE said the reclassification conforms to international best practice and will enable domestic and international investors to compare listed companies across industry sectors.

“It also assures investors that companies listed on Gems are subject to the same level of disclosure applied to companies listed on the Mims and Aims,” said NSE chief executive officer Geoffrey Odundo in a statement.

“The exchange believes this will enhance the profile of the companies listed on Gems. An enhanced profile will assist the business aspirations of Gems companies marketing their products and services to potential clients.”

Old Mutual Securities analyst Eric Munywoki said while the reclassification will not change much in terms of the company performance because all listing requirements remain unchanged, it will make it easier to gauge performance against peers.

“For comparison purposes this would play well. They can now be compared based on industry ratios,” said Mr Munywoki.
