Passenger numbers increase threefold to 7.5 million at JKIA

0

Standard: Kenya has increased air passenger capacity, following the ongoing expansion of the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). Deputy President William Ruto said the flagship expansion at JKIA has led to a threefold growth, from 2.5 million to 7.5 million passengers annually. However, Ruto said in spite of the infrastructural development, Africa and Kenya in particular, is yet to tap into the full potential of the aviation industry.

“The African aviation industry still lags behind the rest of the world. Nonetheless, demand for air transport has grown steadily over the last few years, with passenger numbers and freight traffic growing particularly quickly,” he said. “Africa is the third-fastest growing region in the world in terms of aviation traffic.”

Ruto said the Government is expanding and modernising other facilities at the Moi International Airport in Mombasa, Kisumu International Airport, Malindi, and Lamu, among several other airports and airstrips across the country to make the country a regional and global aviation hub.

The move is aimed at increasing accessibility to air transport services and facilitating growth. “The aviation industry accounts for 10 per cent of our gross domestic product. In Africa, the industry supported more than seven million jobs in 2013. Indeed tourism, international trade and commerce cannot survive, let alone thrive, without the aviation sector.”

The deputy president directed the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure to develop a policy framework that supports the collaboration between the national government, county governments and the private sector in addressing expansion of the air transport.

He was speaking yesterday at the Kenya Airways Pride Centre in Embakasi, Nairobi, where he officiated at the opening of a one-day workshop on growth and development of the aviation industry.

Nairobi Aviation students stone Nation offices in protest over ‘Certificates of Doom’ feature

0

The Star: Nairobi Aviation College students have stormed Nation Media Group offices over claims that the institution’s certificates are fake.

The Nairobi Aviation students hurled stones at the building in the CBD on Monday shouting Dennis Okari’s name.

They demanded an explanation from Okari, whose investigation was aired on NTV on Sunday.

The expose dubbed ‘Certificates of Doom’ alleged that the Nairobi Aviation College admits students without primary and secondary school certificates at a minimum fee of Sh3,000.

A lecturer alleged to be from Nairobi Aviation reportedly confirmed the claims, telling Okari that he has helped many obtain and “clean” their certificates.

“If you have Sh5,000 you will have a certificate at this school, as long as you know somebody from the management,” said the lecturer.

A class six drop-out is also said to have obtained an engineering certificate from Nairobi Aviation without taking any classes.

The High Court had temporarily stopped NTV from airing the expose, ordering Okari not to carry out investigations, on January 30. “A temporary injunction is hereby granted preventing the defendant from airing the expose and investigations advertised, known as ‘Certificates of Doom’, pending the hearing of this application on February 4,” the court said in a letter.

“This honourable court issues an order of a mandatory injunction compelling the defendant not to involve the plaintiff in any investigation touching on its core business.”

Slimming therapy inspired ‘Top 40 under 40’ entrepreneur to start high-flying weight-loss firm

Elizabeth Simiyu-Bisher is the founder and CEO of Slim Therapy Limited.

After the birth of her son Karim in 2009, Elizabeth Simiyu–Bisher gained 13 extra kilograms. “I developed the dreaded mummy tummy once I began to wean my son. From 6 months to 10 months, I jumped from 62 kilograms to 75 kilograms. I began to think of how I could shed it. I wanted to go back to my pre-pregnancy body.” She tried exercising, diets and slimming belts but nothing seemed to work. In the end, she turned to electrotherapy. “It completely eliminated my tummy fat, and after seeing how good I looked, I began to contemplate starting a side business that could offer electrotherapy to women and men who were struggling with excess weight but couldn’t seem to find a workable solution.”

Slimming Treatement SliderThe slimming treatment slider at Slim Therapy Limited.

However, Elizabeth didn’t have a startup seed to set her business idea off. “Fortunately, I encountered two venture capitalists who saw potential in my business idea and helped me raise Sh. 2.3 million startup capital.” She did a training course in electrotherapy and in 2011, she opened Slim Therapy Limited in Westlands. Initially, Elizabeth began serving her friends, colleagues and their acquaintances. “Demand for the services grew at a fast pace. I began to contemplate expanding to accommodate everyone.” Unknown to her, though, her business had already hit the rocks despite the high demand that streamed her way! Reason? Her book keeping was deficient! “I did not have a solid business plan or audit reports from day to day. A normal book keeping day for me comprised recording of how many customers showed up and how much they spent.”

Consequently, although Elizabeth kept an operating float, her business lost 15 per cent of her would-be income through these book keeping cracks. “The business didn’t adhere to any cash flow rules. There was no cash flow budget, there was zero cost control, no follow up on payments, and, no projections or plans for shortfalls.” Apparently, her business was also weighed down by unplanned expenses and improper credit control. “There were times clients would attend treatments for a whole month on credit or part payments and then fail to pay on time or even fail to pay at all.” At times, she was forced to dig into her purse to supplement her enterprise’s expenses. “I did not pay myself a salary and there were days when I considered shutting down,” says Elizabeth.

“My vision was not clearly defined; my desire for growth was not backed by any strategy on how this growth would happen,” she says. In an attempt at redeeming her business, Elizabeth decided to enroll for a business training course. “I feared that perhaps my business was doing badly because I had little business training.” She took two entrepreneurial training courses with the Growth Oriented Women Enterprises (GOWE) and the Professional Business Mentors Association (PBMA). “I underwent my first audit with a professional audit firm which explained the position of my business, my enterprise’s tax obligations, and how lack of proper book keeping had created conduits for leakage or loss and wastage of funds could be sealed.” Elizabeth notes that the direct result of better book-keeping was the improved terms of employment for her employees, and clear terms of engagement and services with her clients. “Our treatment stations demand jumped from 40 per cent to an average of 85 per cent per month within a few months, and with this growth, our profits soared.”

She opened her first franchise in Mombasa in 2012 followed quickly by another in Nairobi in 2013. Over the years the weight loss benefits of these treatments started to be seen as the machine imitates normal muscle stimulation as done through conventional exercise. The machine stimulates muscle groups creating enough energy demand for calories to be burned for energy. Per session our clients burn up to 1200 calories and lose about 5kgs per month when combined with proper nutritional management. We also offer various beauty treatments including Facials, Massage, body-scrub and for the first time in Kenya; Fish manicure and Pedicure treatments.

The icing on her cake was being voted one of Business Daily’s Top 40 under 40 Women in 2014! “Today, my book-keeping is in good shape, and I have a clear budget for my franchising campaigns in Thika, Eldoret, Nakuru and Tanzania, which are my enterprise’s hotspots,” she says.

The Step-by-Step Process All Successful Entrepreneurs Follow

0

If you take a quick look at the world’s most successful entrepreneurs, you’d probably conclude there isn’t much to be learned from studying them. The paths they took to become Chris Kirubi and Aliko Dangote are as unique as they are.

But—and it’s a huge but—while their behaviour is idiosyncratic, their thinking is not.

People who have successfully started two or more companies—typically follow the same approach. And if it has worked for them, it may very well work for you.

They Really Wanted to Do What They Set Out to Do

If you don’t have sufficient desire, you won’t give anything your best efforts.

They Begin by Taking a Small Step Toward Their Goal

Starting anything new is risky. You don’t want to move too far too fast. Everything you have probably read about entrepreneurs says they love risk. Nothing can be further from the truth.

After Taking That Small Step, They Stop to See What They Have Learned

Maybe they learn their initial goal is still a good one. Maybe the market tells them they need to go in another direction. Maybe they come to see that they don’t have the requisite desire anymore. The point is after taking that first small step, they come to a complete stop and consider everything that has happened.

Once They Understand What They Learned, They Take Another Small Step

…and go through the cycle once again.

In other words the “formula” for success is figuring out what you truly want to do. And once you know: Act. Learn. Build. Repeat.

What This Means

Implicit in this approach is that your initial idea is going to morph over time, given what you learn in the marketplace. Initially, Howard Shultz had Italian opera playing as background music at Starbucks. Michael Dell began his company by doing nothing more than assembling IBM personal computer knockoffs. The best entrepreneurs don’t wait until their product or service is perfect. They get it “close enough” and launch. They change whatever it is they have to change as they go.

Mumias Sugar’s top managers to be prosecuted for mismanagement

0

As Mumias Sugar engineers an ambitious recovery, its top managers are set to be fired and prosecuted for gross mismanagement of the firm. Strikingly, the expected prosecutions are to include both current and former managers. Agriculture Secretary Felix Koskei, says that an elaborate plan to revive the firm, including immediate replacement of top management, months after audit firm KPMG unearthed major scandals that forced the country’s largest miller to its knees.

“The legal process has taken its course on each and every individual that has been found culpable in whatever manner on what has brought Mumias Sugar to its knees,” Mr Koskei wrote.

Already, the firm has announced vacancies to head all departments – almost seven months since chief executive Peter Kebati and commercial director Paul Murgor were fired. The duo were involved in criminal activities including illegal sugar importation in a scam that cost Mumias Sugar more than Sh1.1 billion. No charges have been brought before the two, while we could not determine if any progress had been made on threats of surcharging them.

But yesterday’s decision to sack even more executives was reached after years of investigation into the collapse of the miller by the agriculture committee of the National Assembly. A final report is, however, yet to be tabled amid claims of a split in the committee orchestrated by people who were implicated in the scandal, several committee members have told ‘The Standard’ in separate interviews.

In an attempt to show fresh resolve, Mr Koskei added that the State would ‘not watch as they walk free and enjoy ill-gotten wealth’ in his threat. He, however, did not reveal any names, but was specific about a board directive to replace top managers. “The Mumias Sugar board has already approved the advertisement and recruitment of staff with requisite competences, work ethics and culture to drive the company back to where we would all want to see it.”

Towards turning around the fortunes of the firm, Mr Koskei said that the State had come up with a bouquet of measures that would reverse the miller from the downward spiral it is on. Among them is a Sh500 million bailout that would be released within the week to enable the firm in settling its current overheads.

Mumias Sugar has sunk to its lowest, turning losses for successive years and losing more than half of its market share locally. In just two years, the miller has reported Sh4.3 billion in cumulative losses – attributing the poor performance to illegal imports of sugar that complicated its marketing. Even with the claims from the management and board, Parliament had evidence that the Mumias Sugar bosses were culpable in the very fraud.

Kathy Kiuna did not ban poor people from JCC, says church

0

Allan and Kathy Kiuna’s JCC church has come out to deny rumours going round on social media that Pastor Kathy Kiuna banned poor people from attending church services at JCC. According to JCC, Kathy Kiuna has not been in the country for the better part of January.

The ‘clarification’ followed sustained allegations and accusations on social media that Kathy Kiuna had remarked the following in her sermon: “This is not a place for poor people. If you cannot tithe, find another church. We do not entertain poverty.”

The new controversy surrounding Kathy came as the ashes of another controversy and social backlash towards her husband Allan Kiuna cool off. In November last year, Allan Kiuna was involved in twitter war after posting a controversial tweet that speedily went viral. He had posted: “Had a wonderful golfing day in Pretoria. As haters hate, I am enjoying the goodness of God. Love y’all n c u Sunday!”

Currently, Kathy Kiuna has been taking from Kenyans on social media who have included Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko. Sonko went ahead to air his views on his Facebook page saying, “Watu wangu naskia mumefukuzwa Church zenu due to poverty don’t worry tuko pamoja. Many Christian believers who invest years in their lives in what they do will one day stand before the Lord and realize they were building the house, not the Lord but sinking sand. Before we act, we must ask why? Why are we doing what we are doing? Has God called us to this task? Or is the real motive purely financial or otherwise or control.”

Best Practices for Working from Home

0

Many people realize that taking the plunge into working from home can be a considerable boon to their lifestyles, thanks to unconventional work hours and the solitude of one’s personal life.

Here are some critical best practices to help new home workers get the most out of their newfound freedom.

1) Create a dedicated workspace. This is an important step since you’ll want to ensure no distractions while you’re working. Some benefits of homing yourself amid paper stacks and dust bunnies include:

• No one will bother you with requests to eat or watch TV.

• You can put on your pajamas if you want, or not bother to shower.

2) Establish boundaries for work time vs. home time. While it’s essential to regularly interact with friends and family to keep your personal life thriving, it should go without saying that work time is for WORK, and you should not be giving out work advice or pitching in with house chores while the clock’s ticking.

3) Set up a schedule for yourself. If you want to make sure you get enough sleep, don’t fall into the trap of staying up past your bedtime in a trance of Excel sheets.

4) Make sure you have a dedicated phone line for work calls. And don’t give out the number to anyone who isn’t expecting it. Otherwise, you’re going to start getting prank faxes and pizzas on your front porch.

5) You MUST take breaks! Sitting in front of a computer all day is not suitable for your health. While taking one too many bathroom breaks in the office might make you hip-checked into a supply cabinet by your officemate, there’s no reason to let that happen at home when you can take an extra-long break in the privacy of your potty.

6) Avoid gorging on meals during work hours. It’s easy to lose track of time when you’re lost in the rhythm of a delicious meal, but it will only make your belly feel bloated and not your brain feel clever.

7) Schedule time for exercise! You should try biking or running to the office every morning, either before you start working or at lunch – it will keep your blood flowing and fuel up those brain cells.

8) Don’t forget to have fun! At home, you don’t have the boss hovering over your shoulder, so you can finally relax! Try playing video games or doing something nice for yourself, like watching TV or eating ice cream.

How to get a job at your dream company

0

It’s not so uncommon to have a dream company before you even have a dream job.

But once you know what your dream company is, what’s next? How do you begin the process of getting noticed and showing the team that you’re the next great addition?

Here’s your four-step game plan. Hint: It’s not about submitting your resume to every open job on the website.

Do Your Research

Why is this so critical? The more you know about the company, the more you’ll be able to stand out in your networking conversations and application materials—plus you’ll even sound more enthusiastic in the interview. Of course, your research shouldn’t stop at the company level. Pull up LinkedIn and see what you can learn about who works at and runs the company to see what themes come up.

Craft Your Career Narrative

Once you have a really good sense of what you’re signing up for, see how you fit into the picture. What is your career narrative, and why does it lead you to this particular company?

With your story strung together, practice, practice, and practice some more. You’re going to need to nail your elevator pitch when it comes time for you to meet those people you’ve been stalking on LinkedIn and, with any luck, the interviewers at this company.

Get Your Foot in the Door

This is where things get a bit trickier. Armed with your perfected elevator pitch and in-depth company knowledge, your next step is connecting with people who work at your dream company. If you already have a friend or acquaintance who you feel comfortable contacting to learn more about the company, great! If not, here’s how to find an “in” at the company fast.

Tailor Your Application

Now that you’ve laid all the groundwork, it’s finally time to apply. (If you get an internal referral from all the networking you’ve been doing, that’s even better.) This being your dream company and all, you’ll obviously not send your standard resume. Tailor that resume like you mean it, so there can be no doubt you’re ideal for the company.
