Politician George Wainaina risks auction over car hire debt

Former Nairobi County Chief of Staff George Wainaina is set to lose some of his assets to a car leasing firm over an unpaid car hire debt amounting to Sh22 million.

This is after the High Court gave Mr Rajendra Ratilal Sanghani and Granada Trading Company Ltd a green light to attach Wainaina’s assets to recover the debt.

Wainaina is said to have hired eight vehicles, including a Mercedes Benz, a Range Rover, and several Toyota Hilux from the firm, during his tenure at City Hall (between 2013 and 2017).

It is alleged that he hired a Toyota Hilux for a total of 1,980 days at a cost of Sh2,500 per day. The firm said he incurred a debt of Sh4.5 million.

He also hired another vehicle and stayed with it for 1,740 days, incurring a debt of Sh5.2 million and another one for 1,830 days and a debt of Sh11.9 million.

Mr Wainaina was to pay Sh6,500 per day for using the vehicle. He, however, failed to pay as per the agreement, prompting the firm to move to court.

The matter was resolved through mediation, and Wainaina was ordered to pay Sh22 million within 60 days in a consent that was approved by the deputy registrar of the High Court, Claire Wanyama, on March 10, last year.

In their latest appearance before the court, Wainaina requested for an additional 60 days to settle the debt, but Justice Josephine Mong’are rejected the plea.

“The consent recorded by the parties is an order of this court, and the next step in default was to execute,” the judge said.

The businessman stated that the total debt owed is Sh150 million plus interest for the lease of the vehicles.
