Kenyan investor has shared how his investment in a local Money Market Fund (MMF) performed within a half-month period. The investor who identified as Hilary shared that he invested Sh272,371 in the Sanlam MMF.
After receiving his statement for the period, his MMF savings had earned Sh1,100 interest after tax from May 16, 2025. This performance implied that had may have earned double the amount had his MMF savings started on May 1.
The performance of his investment drew varied reactions from fellow investors. A couple of them were not clear on whether the Sh1,100 earned was for the whole month or had just been earned in a fifteen-days window. Bizna Kenya sampled some of the comments as follows:
Leverage the power of compounding…Investing Is not about get rich quick gains or gambling. You are on the right track. – Samuel.
You must have saved the cash midway through the month…if it was from 1st day of the month, the return would have been double that. Sanlam MMF is a good place to pack your cash before a good investment opportunity come through. – Kibe.
Hata ukianza biashara ya mboga na Sh500, you will make many times more than Sh1,100 per month surely. That money should be engaged somewhere else. – Naliaka.
That is just caution against inflation….people, if you want to invest money, look for better investment opportunities…otherwise ni kusave tu umesave! – Mukami.
Sh1 million in MMF pays me Sh8,000 monthly. Is it worth it?
Now, imagine if you decided to step into the world of private lending—as a Shylock—offering short-term credit at a 20 percent return every 15 days. That same Sh272,371, if lent out under such terms, would generate Sh54,474 in just 15 days. By the end of the first month, you’d have earned Sh108,948—almost 40 times what a MMF yields in the same timeframe. – Erick.
Sh200,000 and you get Sh1,000 after a month? That to me does not make financial sense. What if you invest Sh50,000 to do two acres of beans? An acre can give you 10 bags each costing Sh10,000;do the math. – Stephen.
I doubt if you had all that amount the whole month. You should have earned no less than Sh2,000. You must have topped up significantly from the last one week. – Cheruiyot.
