Signs Of A Car Transmission Problem That Needs Repair

The transmission of your vehicle is a pretty complex mechanism which controls the speed of your engine and delivers power to your wheels so you are able to safely drive down the road. Many people believe these problems to be really expensive to get repaired and although they can in some cases, if you catch the problem early enough, you might just need a new seal or some other simple fix. Below are some signs you should pay attention to which could indicate transmission failure so you can get your vehicle straight to the repair shop right away.

Grinding Noise

Your transmission should be shifting smoothly and shouldn’t be making any disturbing noises while you are operating it. If you notice any grinding noises, it could be an indication of your transmission fluid being low, but it could also be another mechanical issue such as the gear syncing up.

Leaks in your transmission fluid

Many problems can arise from a leak in your transmission fluid, including failing completely. If you should notice a brownish fluid colored puddle under your car or in your driveway, chances are it is the fluid. It’s important you get it fixed immediately.

Pungent smell

A sign of your transmission overheating is a not so pleasant pungent smell. This smell is the cause of  its burning fluid and could be due to low transmission fluid which can be caused by a leak. Its essential that you address this issue right away since fluid is needed to keep many of its parts lubricated and working properly. Even more important, your transmission will burn up without it.

Check Engine Light

Your check engine light is an obvious indicator that something is wrong with your vehicle. The only problem, however, is there can be numerous reasons why it comes on. Therefore, taking it to an auto repair shop or buying a diagnostic tool is the only way you can know for sure. It will come on if there is a problem with your transmission.

Trouble Shifting

If you find your vehicle having problems shifting, it’s time to have an auto technician look at it. It might feel clunky when trying to shift gears or it doesn’t change gears like it’s supposed to. If you hear a clunk noise when you are shifting, this is definitely a sign of transmission problems.

These problems should never be ignored and should be fixed promptly. The longer you wait, the more expensive the repairs are going to be. When it comes to improving and maintaining the longevity of your car, you need to be able to spot something that is not right and get it resolved quickly. The good news is that such problems are typically easy to detect since they are normally accompanied by a sensation or sound

  1. It’s great that you talked about how your transmission fluid could be low if you notice any grinding noises when shifting gears. I was driving my kid to school yesterday and I noticed some strange noises when shifting gears. I didn’t seem safe so I should probably get a car mechanic to look into it.
