The big salaries Kenyan nurses could earn working in UK

Kenyan nurses who will be traveling to the United Kingdom for work are set for heavy pay that could be as high as two to three times what local nurses earn.

A fresh university graduate will earn at least Sh. 323,326 per month in the UK compared to Sh. 99,620 they would have earned in Kenya.

According to the National Health Service (NHS) pay structure, the estimated annual average salary for a nurse is nurse is Sh. 4, 324,410. The Kenyan nurses will work under the NHS, and if the Kenyan government is able to negotiate for good salaries, they may end up earning this average.

A newly qualified nurse enters the workforce at Band Five and, with enough experience, can earn up to Sh. 397,977 (£31,534).

Nurses who live and work in Inner London get 20 percent of basic salary which is subject to a minimum payment of Sh. 696,187 (£4,608) and a maximum payment of Sh. 1,072,231 (£7,097). This implies that the nurses’ pay in the UK will also be dependent on where they live and work and the cost of living in these areas.

Kenya is expected to send between 1,000 and 2,000 nurses to the UK. Already, over 3,000 nurses have expressed interest in traveling to the UK for work.

Nurses seeking these jobs are required to possess a Bachelor’s degree in nursing from a recognized institution, a license from the Nursing Council, a valid police clearance certificate, and proof that they are not currently employed in the public or private sector.

Although it was not in the advertisement from the Ministry of Labour, the nurses are required to have at least 18 months experience. They will also will be required to take a multiple-choice English proficiency test and a computer-based test for UK nursing midwifery.
