Veronica Wairimu: I quit my well-paying nursing career to work in a quarry

For Veronica Wairimu, the conventional education path led her towards a career in nursing, a profession she passionately enjoyed and excelled in for 10 years. This is after years of dedicated study

Nonetheless, she found the nursing career unfulfilling as it imposed certain limitations on her self-expression. In pursuit of self-fulfilment, Veronica realized her innate desire to become a business owner.

She craved independence from employment. This stemmed from her childhood dreams she harboured of becoming a self-reliant woman.

In an interview with Inooro TV, Veronica revealed that she temporarily set aside her aspirations to pursue a nursing degree, following her mother’s counsel.

After completing her education, she spent some time working in the industry. Eventually, she made the bold decision to leave formal employment, surprising many of her family and friends.

She decided to pursue her dream; independence. She was uncertain about the business to start. Eventually, she settled on opening her own quarry.

This surprising decision challenged stereotypes about women’s capabilities in traditionally male-dominated areas.

“When I quit my job, I didn’t know what I wanted to pursue but I knew I was done being employed,” she said.

Her father believed in her dream and gave her with Sh. 20,000 as initial capital for the business. Her first move was to lease land abundant in quarry materials in Kiamuringa, Embu County.

Today, she has created employment opportunities for many women & youth in the area and is earning a good income. Her primary business focus revolves around delivering quality products to her customers.

“It was easier finding female employees for this job. Women do the digging while men carry the materials.”

Veronica Wairimu actively engages in the quarry work alongside her employees albeit being the boss. Every day, she hires 10 casual workers to ensure the profitability of the business and make a positive impact in the community.

“If you feel you are not thriving in where you are, or it’s not your calling, go to where God has called you,” she concluded with this advice.
