Wananchi Group to send employees home

The Wananchi Group has issued a letter to all its employees indicating that it will be sending an unspecified number of staff home.

Wananchi Group is the parent firm of Zuku.

According to the letter obtained by Bizna Kenya, the employees will be rendered redundant following the integration of its cable and DTH (Direct to Home) businesses.

“Resulting from this integration and alignment, we wish to notify you that some positions will be rendered redundant,” reads the letter in part. “The HR Department shall be issuing notice of redundancy letters to ALL employees through their respective HOD’s.”

The firm further announced that the exercise shall take 30 days during which period the management will review a headcount implication of its latest business integration.

The move comes shortly after a US government-backed private equity fund, Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), took over the management of Africa Telecommunications, Media and Technology Fund (ATMT Fund), the company that controls Wananchi Group Holdings.
