The cabinet secretary for National Treasury Ukur Yatani has allocated Sh. 2 billion for coal and nuclear development in the country.
“To support the production of reliable and affordable energy, I propose…Sh. 2 billion for development of nuclear energy as well as exploration and mining of coal,” said Yatani.
This comes even as calls for the coal and nuclear energy agency known as Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (Nupea) to be scrapped as it serves no purpose in energy provision in the country.

The National Treasury used Sh. 537.7 million and Sh. 509.98 million in the year to June 2018 and in the year to June 2019 respectively financing Nupea activities.
A report in a local business newspaper reported that the huge chunk of the money was spent on paying salaries, wages and allowances and conducting environmental impact studies of the proposed nuclear power plants.
Nupea was established over a decade ago in anticipation of an economic boom that was expected to increase electricity demand both for manufacturing and households.
