VVIP Protection in Kenya: The revelation by Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i that Deputy President is guarded by 257 security officers has ignited debate on some of the most highly protected senior members in the society.
Former top editor at The Standard newspaper David Makali, who is now a socio-politico analyst and head of content at Radio Africa Group, has listed some of the people who are highly guarded in the country. According to Makali, the second most highly protected person in Kenya after president Uhuru Kenyatta is not the deputy president but Baringo Senator Gideon Moi.
Makali says that Senator Moi has close to 300 security officers guarding him and his property. This may however not come as a wonder given the position the family of the late president Daniel Moi occupies in society, and the property it owns.

Here is what Makali said;
“Turns out the most guarded Kenyan after President Uhuru is not his deputy William Ruto who has 257 security officers guarding him or third ranking Speaker JB Muturi who has 11 security officers protecting him, or even Chief Justice Martha Koome who has 9 security officers securing her, but Senator Gideon Moi with a whooping 387 policemen for protection of self and property. Keep talking!” said Makali.
According to Makali, Gideon is followed by President Uhuru’s brother Muhoho with 88 security officers, former first lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta with 71 security officers.
“Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has 64 security officers, CS Fred Matiang’i with 59 security officers,” he said.
Makali claimed that the Kenyatta Family in total have almost 3,000 guards for personal and property security. “Former vice presidents Musalia Mudavadi and Kalonzo Musyoka have 34 guards attached to each of them, among the special category of Kenyans accorded presidential or VIP security,” he said.
