Graduate celebrates at Kibandaski that gave him free meals during 8-year studies

It’s been one week since Eric Ndolo celebrated his graduation in a colourful ceremony at Mount Kenya University, where he earned a Bachelor of Education (Arts) in English and Literature. This marked the end of an 8-year wait for the special day.

While many graduates opt for fancy after-party celebrations at their homes or rent spaces in hotels, Eric Ndolo chose to commemorate the occasion at a kibanda, a place that he called ‘home’.

In a previous interview with a local digital media outlet, Ndolo mentioned that the people at the kibanda were generous enough to provide him with free meals during his days as a student.

Their support helped him survive until he graduated from the institution. In his campus days, Ndolo worked as a casual labourer, doing jobs such as washing carpets or teaching pupils during the holidays.

“I have been in the university for 8 years; I had to defer in 2018 due to fee constraints even though I had three semesters to conclude my university education. I went back to conclude my degree last year,” he said.

Despite navigating the unspoken challenges that many university students face, Ndolo returned to express his gratitude to those who walked the miles with him. His story went viral on social media.

“I felt like spending my graduation day in a place where when I had no money, they could give me food without money. My friend works there and he would pay with the little he is paid.”

“I was overjoyed and thankful because I never went a day without eating at that kibanda, and I loved how they all smiled when they saw me in a gown,” the overjoyed young man stated.

MKU requested the recent graduates to share the best moments from their recent graduation photos in exchange for a Sh. 5,000 voucher. Ndolo got the most nominations and was awarded.

“Undoubtedly the voucher winner is none other than Erick Ndolo Nthuko who hit the news line for celebrating his graduation at the kibandaski. Congratulations Erick, pick your voucher from the Communications Office, Alumni Plaza Office G001,” wrote MKU in a Facebook post.

Ndolo expressed gratitude to his mother for her unwavering support throughout his studies, despite facing rough moments. He dedicated his degree to her, stating that she was his motivation to finish his studies.

“Anytime I had a problem, my mother was willing to help; she even borrowed where possible for me to get what I needed.”

“I actually dedicate this degree to her because being left with four children, with the last born being in Class Six and now she is in university is an achievement,” Ndolo added.

Ndolo is now working as a teacher at a school in Laikipia on BOM terms.
