Uhuru appoints Francis Muthaura, 71, KRA chairman

President Uhuru Kenyatta has appointed former head of Public Service Francis Muthaura as the new chair of the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).

In a gazette notice dated May 25, President Kenyatta further revoked the appointment of Edward Sambili as KRA board chairman.
Edward Sambili once served as Central Bank of Kenya deputy governor and Permanent Secretary in the ministry of Planning.

“IN EXERCISE of the powers conferred by section 7 (3) of the State Corporations Act and section 6 (2) (a) of the Kenya Revenue Authority Act, I, Uhuru Kenyatta, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces appoint— FRANCIS K. MUTHAURA (AMB.) to be the Chairperson of the Kenya Revenue Authority, up to 20th October, 2019,” said President Kenyatta in a Kenya Gazette. Muthaura has been serving as the Lapsset Development Authority chairman.

Muthaura’s appointment comes months ahead of Commissioner General John Njiraini’s exit.

Njiraini has served at the helm of the Revenue authority for five years.

Charles Makori Omanga was appointed as a member of the board of the KRA to replace Abdi Bare Duale whose appointment was revoked.

Omanga will serve until June 14, 2020, effective May 30.

Other appointments contained in the gazette notice include that of Isaac Awuondo who was named the chairperson of the Board of the Kenya Airports Authority.

Awuondo, who is currently the managing director of Commercial Bank of Africa, will serve in that position for three years effective May 11.
