Safaricom announces changes in M-Pesa airtime purchase limit

Telecommunication company Safaricom has announced changes in the least amount of airtime a customer can purchase on M-Pesa.

In a message to its customers on Tuesday, September 17, Safaricom announced the revision of the minimum Mpesa airtime limit from Sh5 to Sh1.

“Hata shilingi ni pesa! Sasa unaweza kununua Safaricom airtime ya kuanzia shilingi moja ukitumia M-Pesa. Angalia M-Pesa balance yako na ujaribu kununua leo,” Safaricom stated.

The telco currently charges voice calls at Sh4.87 per minute during peak hours and Sh2.50 off-peak, while sending text messages costs Sh1.20.

The new changes come a few days after Safaricom also announced that it would start charging users Sh0.50 for reverse calls. The fee will apply to people who use the service more than twice a day.

“This service will be free to the initiator of the reverse call for up to two requests in a day. Subsequent reverse call requests made within the day (after the first two requests) will be charged an access fee of Sh0.5 per reverse call request,” Safaricom said.

This charge is designed to prevent misuse of the reverse call service, as Safaricom observed that some users request reverse calls even when they have enough airtime.
