Panara was returning home from a meeting at one members’ club in Nairobi. He was shot in the neck, with police recovering two spent cartridges at the scene of crime.
After shooting him dead, the two gunmen then placed leaflets next to his body. The leaflets appeared to have been designed to state the reason behind his killing and to warn unidentified individuals.
They read as follows: “One Panara down… Vacate Narok land… Narok land belongs to Maasai.” The leaflets pointed to a potential land dispute. Investigators from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations however said that while a land dispute might have been the cause of the murder, Panara may have been involved in a different dispute, but his killers decided to highlight land dispute to divert attention.
Reports say that Sagar Panara was a manager at an IT solutions firm in Nairobi. He had held this position for a period of 14 years.
