Shock as 82 percent of matatu drivers fail NTSA license renewal test

Co-Op post

82 per cent of all drivers who took the National Transport and Safety Authority license renewal test between June 9 June 16 have failed.

According to NTSA Deputy Director and Head of Safety Compliance, Driver Training and Testing Wilson Tuigong, out of the 302 drivers tested, only 54 had passed.

The drivers undertook the written and applied theory NTSA license renewal test at the NTSA vehicle inspection grounds located along Likoni Road in Nairobi.

The tests follow a directive that issued by Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen in April 2023. The directive stipulated that all public service vehicle drivers and commercial drivers must undertake driving license renewal tests when renewing their licenses every three years from June 1, 2023.

Murkomen also ordered that from July 1,  these drivers will be subjected to mandatory medical tests when renewing their licenses.

According to a release from the NTSA, the re-tests will be conducted in all NTSA Driver Test Units.  “The re-test process involves administration of both written theory exam and oral submissions. The questions are drawn from the content provided in the Curriculum for driver training and testing,” the NTSA said.

The re-test results will be processed within 24 hours of administration and a driver will have the chance to re-sit in the event they fail the test.  The driver will be free to undergo refresher training at a driving school of choice before taking the re-test or upon failing the exam.

Drivers will be required to apply online via their e-citizen account at a fee of Sh. 1,050. “The re-test is for commercial and public service vehicle drivers and is a pre-requisite for renewal of driving licences with class endorsement(s); B3, D1, D2, D3, C, C1. CE and CD,” NTSA said.
